Mental Health Support for Children & Teens
Emotions can feel big and overwhelming—especially for kids and teens still learning how to manage them. At Willow Tree, we offer compassionate, creative mental health services that help children and teens develop tools for emotional regulation, resilience, and self-understanding in a calm and supportive environment.
Building Mental Wellness
At Willow Tree, we take a skill-building approach to mental wellness. Emotional regulation and other social-emotional learning skills such as flexibility, self-awareness, and resilience are all skills that children and teens can learn with the right guidance and support.
Our mental health services are designed to be preventative and proactive: scaffolding the skills your child needs to navigate challenges now and in the future. We focus on building a strong foundation for long-term emotional well-being, using developmentally appropriate strategies grounded in psychology, behavior science, and play.
We are not just traditional “talk therapy”
Learn more about our approach based on the age of your child below:
-
Young children often express emotional needs through behavior—not words. That’s why our work with younger clients is play-based, visual, and hands-on.
Using a skill-building approach, our therapists may incorporate storytelling, games, imaginative play, and visual routines, to teach your child how to:
Understand and name their feelings
Strengthen social-emotional learning skills
Manage frustration, transitions, and anxiety
Solve social problems and develop flexibility
Use calming tools and communication strategies
Play Therapy with young children should always involve the parent to ensure the strategies and skills are being implemented outside of therapy sessions for best results!
We make therapy fun, safe, and engaging!
-
Children in this age group are beginning to develop a stronger sense of self—but emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, and flexible thinking can still be difficult. Our approach balances play-based learning with more structured skill-building, helping kids develop a practical emotional toolkit they can use at school, home, and with peers.
Sessions may include:
Social problem-solving through games and role play
Visual tools, movement-based regulation strategies, and story-driven learning
Coaching on navigating peer conflict, disappointment, and perfectionism
Early executive functioning and self-monitoring skills
Activities that incorporate your child’s interests, humor, creativity, and imagination
We keep sessions engaging, safe, and empowering—so kids can practice new skills while feeling successful, understood, and in control.
-
Tween years can be especially challenging, kids are caught between the desire for independence and the need for support. Many begin to experience stronger emotions, peer pressure, identity exploration, or anxiety about school and social situations.
Our therapy for tweens blends creative expression, values-based reflection, and concrete skill-building to support:
Emotional awareness and self-regulation
Anxiety management and flexible thinking
Coping with peer dynamics, exclusion, or self-doubt
Building routines, motivation, and problem-solving
Understanding and advocating for their unique needs (especially for neurodivergent kids)
Puberty, dating, social media and other tween issues.
We also support depression, eating disorders, substance use, or other challenges - let us know during your free consultation call!
We use tools like journaling, metaphor, movement, games, and special interests to keep therapy relatable, relevant, and empowering—helping tweens feel heard and supported through this transition.
-
Teens need a space that’s safe, non-judgmental, and respectful—where they can show up as they are.
Our work with teens is collaborative and deeply personalized depending on the challenges they are experiencing. We offer flexible session formats such as:
Typical counselling / psychotherapy
Art based Therapy
Walk N’ Talk in the community
Virtual sessions
Some Goals may include:
ACT and CBT-based tools for anxiety, low mood, and thought spirals
Exposure strategies for OCD or phobias
Honest discussions around self-image, perfectionism, and pressure
Mindfulness, grounding, and regulation tools
Art, music, writing, or humor as therapeutic tools
Special interests, fandoms, or cultural references to make therapy engaging
Space to explore values, identity, and direction—with support, not pressure
We see your teen as a whole person—not just a diagnosis—and walk alongside them in building skills to navigate life with more confidence, flexibility, and self-trust.
