Build, Create and Connect

Builders Lab brings children together through a shared interest in building and creating. Participants work on individual and collaborative projects that encourage imagination, experimentation and teamwork. Developed by our Senior Clinical Team, this group was created to provide kids with a low-pressure environment to foster genuine peer connection, with support and guidance from facilitators to build upon a variety of skills embedding in shared common interests - building!

Facilitators thoughtfully design each activity to create meaningful opportunities for communication, cooperation, flexible thinking and shared problem-solving. They provide guidance in real time when children need support navigating ideas, frustration, compromise or peer interactions. To children, it feels like building and creating with peers. Behind the scenes, each experience is intentionally structured to support social-emotional growth.

Builders Lab may be a great fit for children who:

  • Love LEGO, blocks, marble runs, train tracks or construction activities

  • Enjoy designing, inventing and solving problems

  • Prefer hands-on activities over conversation-based groups

  • Want to connect with other children through shared interests

  • Benefit from a smaller and more supportive social environment

  • Are developing flexibility, teamwork or collaborative-play skills

  • Have ADHD, autism, anxiety or executive-functioning differences

  • Would benefit from a low pressure environment to build peer connections

  • Learn and connect best through movement, creativity and active participation

Builders Lab is inclusive program.

What Will We Build?

Activities will vary based on the group’s interests, strengths and developmental needs. Projects and activities may include:

  • LEGO and brick-building challenges

  • Marble-run engineering

  • Towers, bridges and structures

  • Fort and shelter building

  • Train and transportation worlds

  • Cardboard construction projects

  • Collaborative cities and communities

  • Team design missions

  • STEM and engineering challenges

  • Inventor activities

  • Imaginative construction and open-ended building.

Our Approach

Builders Lab is interest-based, strengths-focused and neurodiversity-affirming. Facilitators help children connect through shared building experiences while respecting different communication styles, sensory needs and ways of participating. Activities are flexible, hands-on and adapted to the interests and developmental needs of the group.

Through shared building experiences, children have opportunities to practise:

  • Communication

  • Collaboration and teamwork

  • Flexible thinking

  • Planning and organization
